THE 30A TRAVEL GUIDE

30A OVERVIEW:
30A is a scenic highway that is approximately 20 miles long and runs along the Emerald Coast of the Florida Panhandle. Scenic highway 30A primarily runs through the city of Santa Rosa Beach, which is east of Destin. 30A is also referred to as The Hamptons of the South, and is known for it's incredibly soft snow-white sand and gorgeous water with an emerald hue. Many fabulous beach communities run along scenic highway 30A, such as Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Grayton Beach and Alys Beach. Each community has it's own personality and distinct architecture. I'll share more about each community in this guide so you can discover which community fits your vacation needs best! I've also partnered with some of my favorite local companies in this guide to help you plan the perfect vacation!
Where are the nearby airports? The two closest Airports are VPS in Fort Walton Beach, and ECP in Panama City Beach.
How do you recommend getting around 30A? I highly recommend renting a car if you fly into VPS or ECP. You'll need a way to get to 30A from the airport, plus 30A is about 20 miles long! It's worth having a car to be able check out the different communities and restaurants vs taking an Uber from the airport.
Rental Car Options: If you are flying into VPS or ECP, make sure to reserve a car from the airport. Car rentals have been known to sell out in peak season so make sure to book in advance! Check out all your options here.
Fun Fact: If you want to sound like a local, make sure you say you are vacationing on 30A and not in 30A, because 30A isn't a city (it's a road!).
Do you recommend beach hopping? No. The beach that runs along 30A is actually just one long stretch of beach. Regardless of which community you stay in, it's all the same beach! Because all of 30A is the same stretch of beach, you do not need to search for best beach like you would on an island. I do recommend visiting all of the communities along 30A, but not to see their beaches. The beach will look the same. The different communities are worth visiting so that you can explore their amazing architecture, local shops, and restaurants.
Private vs. public beaches along 30A: what beach can I use? You can use any public beach access along 30A or you can use the beaches at the State Parks along 30A. If you are staying in a community with private beach, you are welcome to use that beach. If you are staying in a Gulf Front home with private beach you can use this as well.
If I'm not staying in a neighborhood with private beach or in a gulf front home, how do I know if there is a public beach access near me? Click here and plug in the address of where you are staying/planning to stay. It will give you a color coded map in regards to where the public beach is near that location, and how big the public beach is! This website above is so helpful when planning your stay!
What are the State Park Beaches? Grayton Beach State Park, Deer Lake State Park, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and Camp Helen are all great options for the beach if you aren't staying near a public beach access. There’s lots of parking and beach space. The parks require a very small entrance fee.
Where can I stay with a private beach? Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, Seaside*, Watercolor, Watersound, Seacrest, Gulf Front Homes along 30A, and any other neighborhood with deeded beach access.
*Seaside will let you use their private beach access even if you aren’t staying there, but you must rent chairs through Cabana Man Chair Rentals.

When is Peak Season? End of May, June, July and the beginning of August when school is out for summer. My favorite months: August, September, and October. If you are curious about 30A weather, see the chart below!

DUNE ALLEN, GULF PLACE & BLUE MTN
The West end of 30A is made up of Dune Allen Beach, Gulf Place, and Blue Mountain Beach.
Why stay here? This area can be a little less congested during peak season.
Food options: Shunk Gulley is a great restaurant in this area. The restaurant offers gulf views, great seafood, and has lots of kid-friendly menu items. For a special occasion or date night, M&P by Farrington Foods is a great option. If you are craving pizza after a long day at the beach, Pazzo Italiano has you covered.
GRAYTON BEACH
Grayton Beach is known as being the artistic and eclectic area of 30A. Visiting the "Grayt Wall of Art" is a must. If you plan to bring your dog on vacation, Grayton Beach is very dog friendly. Their slogan is "Nice Dogs, Strange People." Historic Grayton Beach is the only area on 30A that allows cars on the beach with a permit.
Why stay here? If you love art or if you are bringing your furry friend, Grayton Beach is a "grayt" option.
WATERCOLOR
WaterColor is a a private beach resort community that is walking distance from Seaside.
Why stay here? WaterColor is known for it's community amenities, and is a great option for families and nature lovers. WaterColor amenities include: a beachfront clubhouse pool, tennis & pickleball courts, multiple trails and parks, a lazy river, water slides, multiple playgrounds, a basketball court, multiple pools throughout the community (including a lap pool).
SEASIDE
Seaside is known for its iconic pastel-colored homes, walkable town square, and lively, family-friendly atmosphere. Known as the birthplace of New Urbanism, it offers charming boutiques, gourmet food trucks, and a stunning beachfront pavilion.
Why stay here? Seaside is the OG of 30A and loved by people of all ages. It can get crowded during peak season, so if you want to stay in the amazing community that put 30A on the map (which is 100% worth experiencing!), I recommend staying here during off season or shoulder season for an optimal experience. If you are planning a trip over Spring Break, I would recommend a less busy community.
SEAGROVE
Seagrove is known for it's Old Florida charm, with lush oak trees, quiet streets, and beautiful beaches.
Why stay here? Seagrove offers a more laid-back vibe than the other nearby planned communities while still providing great dining, shopping, and outdoor activities. With easy access to state parks, coastal dune lakes, and scenic bike trails, Seagrove is ideal for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
WATERSOUND
Watersound is known for its secluded upscale atmosphere, and is nestled among dunes and private boardwalks that lead to it's pristine beaches. This gated community offers a peaceful retreat with luxury amenities, scenic trails, and access to rare coastal dune lakes.
Why stay here? Seclusion and privacy. The entire community is gated, which means you'll find less crowds here. The beaches are private, and the community has parks and pools. Note: the boardwalks to get to the beach in Watersound are on the longer side, but if your rental home comes with a golf cart, you can take the golf cart boardwalk to the beach! (A unique feature of this community!)
ALYS BEACH
Alys Beach is known for its striking whitewashed architecture, upscale ambiance, and pristine, uncrowded beaches.
Why stay here? Alys Beach has a unique blend of elegance and privacy. This new urbanism community has dining and shopping all within walking distance. The beaches at Alys are private and only available to guests staying in this community. If you want an Insta-worthy aesthetic and secluded beaches, Alys Beach is a great option.
ROSEMARY BEACH
Rosemary Beach is known for its European-inspired architecture, brick-lined streets, and vibrant town center filled with boutique shops and top-tier dining. You may recognize Rosemary Beach from it's adorable post office and town hall.
Why stay here? Rosemary Beach is a new urbanism community, so everything you need is within walking distance. Rosemary Beach is my go-to recommendation for anyone seeking a romantic getaway. You'll find a private beach here, upscale dining options (highly recommend Gallion's for a date night spot!), spas, and plenty of shopping. This community has amenities for guests including pools, tennis courts, a fitness center + fitness trail, and a private beach.
INLET BEACH
Inlet Beach is known for its wide beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. It's a mix of modern houses and Old Florida Charm, and is less busy than the neighboring planned communities.
Why stay here? Since Inlet Beach is on the far east end of 30A, it allows for easy access to both 30A and Panama City Beach. The spacious beaches and quieter vibe make Inlet Beach perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape on 30A.

30A COUPLE'S GUIDE:
Although 30A's lodging options primarily consist of vacation home rentals, there are several hotels along 30A. I tend to recommend staying in a hotel for couples looking to getaway. Check out the hotels along 30A in a blog post I wrote here.
If you're celebrating a special occasion on 30A, check out the ultra romantic M&P by Farrington Foods for a small and intimate immersive dining experience. My husband and I love dining at this restaurant. Make sure to make a reservation in advance here.

Another great romantic restaurant is Gallion's in Rosemary Beach. You won't find families here for dinner, making it a great date night location. (You must be 18+ to dine at Gallion's after 3pm.) This restaurant couldn't be in a more romantic location, right in the heart of Rosemary Beach. Check out the menu here, and make sure to make a reservation ahead of time here.

30A FAMILY GUIDE:
First and foremost, if you are traveling to 30A with your family, I highly recommend using Morganize It 30A to stock your fridge and pantry with your grocery list before you arrive. In the summer, vacation rental homes typically only allow week long rentals from Saturday to Saturday... which means the grocery stores on Saturdays are CROWDED and full of overflowing grocery carts! Grocery shopping on these days is unpleasant to say the least, especially if you need to buy a lot of stuff. Expect long lines at checkout. For a very reasonable fee + the cost of groceries, Morgan will shop for you and stock your fridge and pantry before you arrive. I've personally used her when I had family visiting, and I can't recommend her enough. It allowed us to spend even more time together, and maximize their time at the beach. This service is SO worth it if you want a stress free check in, and so you don't have to waste your first day on 30A gathering groceries. Book her here! (She also makes fantastic cookie cakes!)
I highly recommend lots of activities if you've got little ones visiting 30A! Here are some of my top recommendations:
Best Parks/Playgrounds on 30A:
1. Fonville Park in Alys
2. Seaside Playground
3. Rosemary Beach Park
4. Helen McCall Park
5. Camp WaterColor Playground
BOATING: I frequently get asked about boating options that are kid-friendly. There are two really good options in Destin, which is just west of 30A. (There aren't any marina's on 30A.) If you are wanting a family friendly dolphin cruise, make sure to book Southern Star Dolphin Cruise. This boat has a glass bottom to make it easier to spot dolphins, and they have a 98% success rate for dolphin sightings! Book here.
Another kid-friendly boat option in Destin is The Buccaneer Pirate Ship! Booking this adventure will make all of your child's pirate dreams come true! They will get pirate training onboard, complete with sword fighting, water gun battles, face painting, treasure hunting, dancing, and more. Parents can join in on the fun, or simply sit back and relax, enjoy the scenery, and watch the swabbies having the time of their lives. Book here.
DINING WITH KIDS:
Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is a great option if you want a casual restaurant with gulf views. If you love seafood but have family members that don't, (or have picky eaters) this restaurant offers the best of both worlds. The seafood here is amazing. They also offer a great kids menu, and they have options on their regular menu like friend sweet tea chicken tenders and burgers which are popular with teens. Check out the menu here.
Have a large family? Pazzo Italiano takes reservations for large groups! Since large groups can encounter long wait times in peak season, this is a huge perk! They have pizza, salads, and amazing Italian dishes. You can also get delivery or to-go here if your family isn't feeling like dining in. I highly recommend taking a pizza to the beach and watching the sunset. Oh, and their Nutella calzone is always a big hit. Check them out here!
Mr. Hibachi at Home is also a big hit with kids and adults. The food is great and they keep kids (and adults) entertained for the entire dinner. It's so convenient since they come to your vacation rental. They are known for their sake filled water guns, but also have have a kid friendly option so the kids can join in on the fun.
If you're wanting to explore the famous 30A bike path, Good Pedals 30A has you covered. They have adult, teen & kid bikes, baby seat attachments, child trailers, gear trailers, and more! Book here.
SHOPPING WITH KIDS:
Get a souvenir for yourself or your kids at the Live Well 30A Store located at the Big Chill. Check out their gear here. (They also do online orders!)
POOLS: I know many families are looking for a pool with their lodging. If you are a guest at any of these places, you will have access to a resort style pool: Seacrest, WaterColor, Watersound, Rosemary Beach, Cypress Breeze, Seaside, Adiago, High Pointe, Prominence, Nature Walk, Highland Park and Gulf Place. Featured below is WaterColor's lazy river.
Communities with a lot of events/things to do for kids during holidays and peak season: Alys Beach, Seaside, and Rosemary Beach. You typically do not need to be staying in these communities to participate in the events.
Find Alys Beach events here.
Find Seaside events here.
Find Rosemary Beach events here.
Beach Tents are very popular on 30A, especially for families with little ones. Here are the rules for beach tents on 30A:
-Limited to 10' x 10' on public beaches
-Must be on upper 1/3 of beach while still making room for emergency vehicles.

LOCAL'S TIP: Shibumi Shade is the easiest beach shade to set up!
Shibumi Shades are easy to set up, compact, and light weight. It's my personal go-to choice for shade on 30A.
Why I love Shibumi Shade:
-It won't blow away (umbrellas are known for doing this on 30A!)
-The classic shade provides shade for up to 8 people, takes less than 3 minutes to set up, and weighs under 4 pounds.
-The mini shade provides shade for up to 4 people, takes less than 3 minutes to set up, weighs 2 pounds, and is carry-on approved! I've personally taken my Mini Shibumi Shade in my carry on bag for several trips!

You made it to the end! Thank you so much for reading! I truly hope you found this helpful. If you have any additional questions, feel free to send me a DM on Instagram at @30atravelguide!
